Until the end of the 1980s, sewer systems in the Netherlands were neglected as a public infrastructure that needed consistent asset management. Best management practices (BMP’s) were subject to discussion, while not being effectively exchanged between municipalities. This gave rise to a new national platform, Institute RIONED, to manage insights and to derive guidelines for sewer management. The project formulated the “Sewer Guidelines”, which through the years have become an understanding on their own, providing information of regulations, design, assessment of hydraulic performance, cost analysis, monitoring of new and existing collection systems of sewage and stormwater.
